Inside the Numerology Chamber Room
Long before numbers lived upon clocks, calendars and account books, they were observed as expressions of pattern—appearing in the heavens, the seasons, music, architecture and the quiet rhythms of human life.
For me, however, the path into their mysteries began much closer to home.
My Nana—my mother’s mother—came to Canada directly from Germany and lived with us while I was growing up. She would tell me stories of meeting travelling people passing by in caravans, and how they taught her to read fortunes using ordinary playing cards.
As a child, I was completely intrigued.
She spoke of the stars, astrology, numbers, numerology and the unseen patterns woven throughout our lives. These things were never presented to me as strange or unnatural. They were simply part of the world as I came to know it—a world filled with symbols, connections and meanings waiting to be explored.
That early fascination remained with me. It became a lifelong interest in tarot, runes, astrology, numerology and the many different ways people have sought greater understanding of themselves and one another.
An Ancient Fascination
The exact beginnings of numerology are veiled by history.
Ancient civilizations, including those of Egypt, Babylonia, Greece, China and Rome, found symbolic, sacred and philosophical meaning in numbers. Their individual practices were not necessarily the same as the numerology we recognize today, but they shared a belief that numbers could express something beyond simple quantity.
Numbers represented order, cycles, proportion and harmony.
The Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who lived during the sixth century BCE, is often associated with the development of Western numerical thought. Pythagorean teachings explored the relationship between number, music and the structure of the natural world. Musical harmony, for example, could be expressed through numerical ratios—suggesting that number was not merely something people invented for counting, but part of an order already present around them.
Over centuries, several systems of numerical interpretation developed. Two of the best known today are commonly called Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology.
Chaldean numerology places particular importance upon the name and the qualities associated with its numerical vibrations. The modern Pythagorean system assigns numbers to letters in a more orderly sequence and often gives greater attention to the birth date. Although their methods differ, both seek to reveal meaning through the relationship between names, dates and numbers.
Before the word numerology became widely used, practices of this kind were sometimes called the Science of Numbers or arithmancy—the art of divination through numbers.
What Is Numerology?
Numerology is a symbolic system for interpreting the numbers connected to our lives.
The letters within a name can be translated into numerical values. The numbers in a birth date can be added and reduced to reveal particular patterns. From these calculations come several different numbers, each offering a window through which we may consider part of ourselves.
A Life Path number may speak of the broader road we travel and the lessons we repeatedly meet.
An Expression or Destiny number may reflect abilities, characteristics and potential.
A Soul Urge number may illuminate inner needs and motivations—the quieter parts of ourselves that others may not always see.
A Personality number may suggest how we appear to the outside world, while Personal Year numbers are often used to explore the changing character and themes of different seasons in our lives.
Some people are also drawn to repeating numbers that seem to appear around them—upon clocks, receipts, addresses or other ordinary places. Whether understood as synchronicity, spiritual communication or simply an invitation to pause and take notice, these patterns can become small moments of reflection.
A Tool for Awareness
I do not believe numerology is meant to place us inside a box or dictate an unavoidable future.
To me, it is a tool for awareness.
It can help us recognize qualities within ourselves, understand areas that may require attention and consider the hurdles we may encounter along the way. It does not do the work for us, but it may gently show us where some of that work could begin.
Numerology can also offer insight into our relationships.
Sometimes we meet someone and immediately seem to understand one another. Conversation flows naturally, and something simply clicks. At other times, despite our best intentions, we cannot quite seem to “get” another person.
Numerology may offer clues as to why.
Different numbers can represent different ways of thinking, communicating, responding and moving through life. Understanding these differences does not make one person right and another wrong. Instead, it may help us approach one another with a little more patience, compassion and perspective.
Like tarot, runes and other symbolic practices, numerology can be explored at many depths. One may begin with a simple number and a few recognizable traits, only to discover that beneath the surface lies a much more intricate portrait.
Each layer invites another question.
Each question may reveal another part of ourselves.

Sometimes awareness begins not with an answer, but with the discovery of a better question.
